TYPES OF LICENCING REQUIRED

If your business sells alcohol, here’s what you need to know!

On-licence

You need an alcohol on-licence to sell or supply alcohol to be consumed on your business premises.

Off-licence

You need an alcohol off-licence to sell or supply alcohol away from the place of purchase.

Club Licence

If you want to sell and supply alcohol at your club. The alcohol will be consumed on site, by club members and their guests.

Temporary Authority

If you are taking over a business that already has a current alcohol licence, you can apply for a temporary authority.

 

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE YOU’VE APPLIED?

Once you have filled in the correct application and sent it to the right local council authority, the process is as follows:

  1. The council will access your application

  2. Your application will be reviewed by the New Zealand Police

  3. Your application will be reviewed by the Regional Public Health Service.

  4. One of the councils alcohol licensing inspectors will visit your business site and review your host responsibility policy

  5. The council will forward your application to the District Licensing Committee for the final decision.

IF GRANTED BY THE DISTRICT LICENSING COMMITTEE

  1. You will need to pay an annual fee before we post your alcohol licence to you. Your new licence lasts one year

  2. Apply to renew your licence at least 20 working days before the expiry date

  3. Display your licence in a visible location near the main entrance of your business site

  4. Pay an annual fee on the anniversary of your licence

After your first renewal, you'll need to apply to renew your licence every three years, at least 20 working days before the expiry date.

IF YOUR APPLICATION IS CONTESTED

We will be informed that

  1. Members of the public object to your application

  2. NZ Police, Auckland Regional Public Health Service or our inspector oppose your application

  3. The District Licensing Committee will contact you if you need to attend a public hearing before a final decision is made
